THE NEPHILIM

Giants, Judgment, and the Mystery Before the Flood

INTRODUCTION

There are passages in the Bible that feel clear and straightforward.

Then there are passages that feel like standing at the edge of a dark forest at night — ancient, mysterious, and far bigger than we expected.

The Nephilim are one of those passages.

For centuries, believers, scholars, pastors, and students of Scripture have wrestled with the strange verses found before the flood of Noah. The Bible gives only a few details, yet those details are powerful enough to leave people asking questions like:

Who were the Nephilim?
Why were they connected to the days before the flood?
What did God mean when He described the wickedness of that world?
How much do we truly understand about the unseen realm?

This lesson is not about fantasy, mythology, or speculation for entertainment.

This lesson is about something deeper:

The Bible reveals that there are realities beyond human understanding, and sometimes Scripture intentionally gives us only glimpses instead of complete explanations.

That should not weaken our faith.

It should deepen our awe.

The goal of this study is not to build strange doctrines or go beyond Scripture.

The goal is to humbly explore what the Bible actually says while recognizing that God has not revealed everything to humanity.

Some mysteries remain mysteries.

And perhaps that is part of the point.

SCRIPTURE READING (KJV)

Genesis 6:1–5 (KJV)

“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

— Genesis 6:1–5 (KJV)

THE WORLD BEFORE THE FLOOD

The world before Noah was not a peaceful primitive paradise.

According to Scripture, humanity had become deeply corrupted.

Violence filled the earth.

Human imagination had become consumed with evil.

Something had gone terribly wrong.

And right in the middle of that description, the Bible introduces a mysterious group called:

The Nephilim.

The word is often translated:
“giants.”

But the passage gives an even stranger description:

“mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”

These were figures connected to power, violence, fame, and fear.

And the Bible places them directly inside the growing darkness that led to God’s judgment through the flood.

That alone should make us pause.

Because Genesis does not present this period as normal human civilization.

It presents it as a world spiraling into chaos before divine judgment fell.

THE MYSTERY OF THE “SONS OF GOD”

One of the greatest debates in biblical history centers around this phrase:

“the sons of God.”

Who were they?

Throughout church history, believers have offered different interpretations.

Some believe the phrase refers to godly descendants of Seth intermarrying with wicked humanity.

Others believe the phrase refers to angelic beings interacting with mankind in some way before the flood.

And here is something important:

Faithful Christians have disagreed on this for centuries.

The Bible does not fully explain every detail.

That should remind us to approach the subject carefully and humbly.

But regardless of which interpretation someone holds, Genesis is clearly communicating something alarming:

The boundary between righteousness and corruption had collapsed.

Humanity was descending into overwhelming wickedness.

The earth itself had become spiritually polluted.

THE BIBLE HINTS AT A LARGER REALITY

One reason this passage fascinates people is because it gives the feeling that humanity only sees part of reality.

The Bible repeatedly reminds us that there is more happening than what human eyes can see.

Scripture speaks about:

angels
demons
principalities
powers
the heavenly host
spiritual warfare
the unseen realm

Most people live as though the physical world is all that exists.

But the Bible never teaches that.

Instead, Scripture presents humanity as living inside a much larger reality created and ruled by God.

The Nephilim passage reminds us that there are mysteries connected to the ancient world that we may never fully understand this side of eternity.

And maybe that discomfort is intentional.

Because modern humanity likes control.

We want everything explained.

Everything categorized.

Everything solved.

But God does not owe mankind complete explanations for every mystery in creation.

WHY THIS MATTERS TODAY

At first glance, people may wonder:

“What does this have to do with my life?”

A lot.

Because the story of the Nephilim is ultimately not about giants.

It is about corruption.

It is about rebellion.

It is about humanity drifting farther and farther from God until judgment became unavoidable.

Jesus Himself gave a chilling warning:

Matthew 24:37 (KJV)

“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

The days before the flood were marked by:
violence
moral collapse
spiritual blindness
human pride
and disregard for God

Does that sound familiar?

Modern civilization may be technologically advanced, but humanity still struggles with the same darkness that existed before the flood.

The human heart still needs redemption.

And that is why this lesson matters.

WHAT WE MUST REMEMBER

The mystery of the Nephilim should not produce fear.

It should produce humility.

There are things we do not fully understand.

There are realities beyond human knowledge.

But one truth remains absolutely clear:

God is sovereign over all creation — seen and unseen.

Nothing in heaven, earth, or the spiritual realm exists outside His authority.

The flood account reminds us that evil does not reign forever.

Judgment eventually comes.

But so does mercy.

In the middle of humanity’s corruption, one verse shines like light in darkness:

Genesis 6:8 (KJV)

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.”

That may be the most important lesson in the entire story.

Even in the darkest generation on earth…
God still extended grace.

WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

1. The Nephilim are part of one of the Bible’s most mysterious passages

Scripture gives only limited details, which should lead us toward humility rather than wild speculation.

2. The world before the flood had become deeply corrupted

Genesis describes a civilization filled with violence, wickedness, and spiritual rebellion.

3. The Bible teaches that reality includes both the physical and unseen realms

Humanity does not fully perceive everything God has created.

4. Mystery does not weaken biblical truth

Some parts of Scripture are intentionally difficult and remind us that God is greater than human understanding.

5. God’s grace still shines in dark times

Even in the generation before the flood, Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
