Paul: Strength, Faith, and Love

Chapter 1 — The Zeal of Saul Study Guide

Opening Scripture (KJV)

“As concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.”
— Philippians 3:6 (KJV)

Driven by Zeal

Saul of Tarsus was driven.

There was an intensity in him that refused to sit still. While others observed, Saul acted. While others questioned, Saul pursued. He committed himself fully to what he believed was right.

His life was shaped by discipline, structure, and conviction.
He was not careless in his faith.

He was committed to it.

Sincere, but Misguided

Saul’s zeal was real—but it was not aligned with truth.

He believed he was honoring God.
He believed he was defending righteousness.

But in reality, he was opposing the very work of God.

This is one of the most sobering truths in Scripture:

A person can be completely sincere…
and completely wrong.

The Danger of Misplaced Passion

Zeal without truth is dangerous.

It can lead to destruction instead of life.
It can justify actions that oppose what is right.

Saul did not lack passion.
He lacked understanding.

And that made all the difference.

A Heart Prepared for Change

Yet even in his error, something stood out—Saul was fully committed.

That kind of intensity, once redirected, would become powerful.

God did not need to create passion in Saul.
He needed to redirect it.

And that is exactly what He would do.

Key Truth

Sincerity and confidence do not guarantee truth.

Life Application

Zeal is powerful.

But it must be guided by truth.

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for the passion You have placed within me.
But I recognize that passion alone is not enough.

Search my heart and reveal anything that is not aligned with Your truth.
Correct me where I am wrong, and guide me where I need direction.

Give me humility to listen, and wisdom to follow what is right.

Take my zeal and shape it according to Your will.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
